GLOUCESTERSHIRE County Council is looking at the possibility of housing post offices in community buildings in a bid to save them from closure.

A group of top county councillors and local MPs has been formed to look at ways of saving some of the county's post offices.

A meeting in Gloucester last week was attended by county council leader Barry Dare, Labour leader Cllr Maureen Rutter, MP for Stroud, David Drew, and council leaders and MPs for Gloucester, Tewkesbury, Cotswolds and Forest of Dean.

The meeting was held to gain information and discuss a united stance on supporting the communities that would be most affected by the closures.

Cllr Dare said: "I am confident that working together is the best way forward and hopefully through this we can continue to put pressure on Royal Mail not to close branches in Gloucestershire.

"Post offices are very important community resources and Gloucestershire County Council is committed to doing all we can to support everyone affected by these cuts."

A spokesman for the county council said: "Our officers are working within communities to establish what assistance we can give.

"We are also exploring the possibility of housing post offices within council buildings, such as libraries if there is a proven need."
