TWO primary school teams from South Gloucestershire have fared well in a battle of robot wars with other pupils across the South West.

Manor Primary School, in Coalpit Heath, and St Michael's Primary School, in Winterbourne, both successfully competed in the recent Wessex Setpoints Lego Robotics Championship at Bath University.

While St Michael's Primary School took part in the competition for the first time, Manor Primary School won the competition for a second year running.

Teams were judged on science presentations displayed and the programming of robots in several missions.

Manor primary's headteacher Hilary Eade said "This was a fantastic opportunity for the pupils to develop their ICT and problem solving skills.

"They have to collaborate as a team and learn to cope with successes and failures. I am really proud of the achievements of the group but more so of their behaviour and positive team spirit."

The team members from Manor Primary School won twelve month subscriptions to a science magazine.

ICT teacher at St Michael's Primary School Kirsty Robson said her pupils had also done well.

She said: "It was there first time in the competition and they all enjoyed it.

"We learnt a great deal about team work and science during the day. I am sure we will be back next year."
