DURSLEY is facing a crackdown on the supply of illegal drugs to the town.

Since January there have been four raids on properties in the Dursley area based on tip-offs from local people, two of which were held in the last six weeks.

The operations involved officers from Dursley and Stroud and included plain clothed officers, dog handlers and search-trained officers.

Sgt Tim Wood, of Dursley Police Station, said the raids had only been possible because of the information given to them by members of the public.

He said: "The only reason we can do search warrants like this is because of the intelligence we have received from the local community.

"We would ask people to continue to talk to us. We will act on intelligence that we receive from the local community."

During the last few months officers from the Safer Community Team based at Dursley Police Station have been working closely with residents to gather the information needed to fight the supply and use of drugs in the area.

Sgt Wood said the continued co-operation from people was vital to make the drugs crackdown a success and to make Dursley a safer place.

He said: "We will be feeding back results from recent operations very soon to the community, but our success is based on residents' communication with us.

"We would appeal to anyone with any information they have regarding the use and or supply of controlled drugs, however small they might consider that information to be, to ring Crimestoppers or talk to us in person at their local police station. Information can be given anonymously."

Last summer, as part of the drugs crackdown, police officers carried out two evenings of random drug tests on revellers on a night out in Dursley.

Anyone with information should call Gloucestershire police on 0845 990 1234 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
