TWO friends who opened a cook shop nearly 20 years ago will close its doors for the final time next month.

Silla King and Jacqui Workman opened The Cookshop, in Dursley, in April 1989.

Both women worked in a cookware shop that was in the building, in Long Street, before and when they found out it was closing decided to take it over.

Their business venture has turned into a lifelong friendship and to start off their retirement they are taking their first holiday together.

"In all our time at The Cookshop we have never been on holiday together because someone always had to look after the shop," said Silla, who was an active member of the Dursley Chamber of Trade.

"We will be very sad to go, we have made lots of friends here and we have lovely customers.

"It is more like a social meeting in the shop sometimes so we will miss that, but you have to stop sometime."

Silla and Jacqui remember a time when Dursley was buzzing and business was booming for the shops in the town.

"It was always busy when Lister's and Bymacks had lots of staff, but now the town is completely different - it is much quieter."

The Cookshop will close on June 7.
