A FLOWER festival to mark 150 years since a village church was rebuilt brought the whole community together for a weekend.

Villagers in Coaley celebrated 150 years since their church, St Bartholomews, was rebuilt by holding a weekend flower festival, as well as a cheese and wine evening and special Sunday service.

Community groups from the village, including several sports teams, the Brownies and the neighbourhood watch group, created spectacular flower displays that filled the church.

Maureen Wibberley, chairwoman of Coaley parish church committee, said: "The flower festival was a very, very successful weekend, which definitely brought the whole community together in a way I have never seen before.

"The church was a hive of activity and it looked absolutely beautiful. To think that 150 years on we have acknowledged the effort that was put in resurrecting the village church is excellent and I hope we keep it in good repair for many, many generations to come."
