Schoolchildren will be on song in music festival

A YOUNG people's music festival is set to start on a high note in South Gloucestershire.

South Gloucestershire Music Service is co-ordinating a Spring Festival of Music featuring a feast of workshops and concerts involving more than 3,000 schoolchildren and young people.

The festival kicked off recently with a concert by the Thornbury Area Music Centre at the town's Castle School and there are around 15 other events to look forward to during the packed programme which runs until Thursday, April 3.

Highlights include The Musical Miscellany on Thursday, March 27 at Downend School, featuring orchestral, string, vocal and wind music.

A Celebration Concert on Saturday, March 29 takes place at the Hexagon Theatre, at Kingsfield School in Kingswood, featuring the Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Other events include African and Indian music workshops, a junior strings workshop and an infant singing festival (with songs from around the world) and three jazz singing workshops.

Ian Rogers, head of the music service, said: "The festival is an exciting opportunity for young musicians to show off their talent as they get involved in a wide variety of events taking place across the whole of South Gloucestershire."

The festival is being sponsored by the Rotary Club of Chipping Sodbury and further information is available from the music service on 01454 863147.
