WE must comment on the shortsighted approach of the council bringing in such heavy charges for pest control.(last weeks gazette) Most people will not pay £45 for what is usually a 10 minute visit.

We have called the 'rat man' out twice in recent months as rats nesting on nearby derelict land come looking for food in the winter. They target our compost bins (we were encouraged by the council to compost our waste and wired the bins as suggested). Our neighbours get the same problems.

By charging £45 people will not bother to use the council and will buy poison to put down themselves. This will endanger wildlife, domestic pets and small children, as the public are not trained where to put or use poisons. The flip side to this is nothing will be done and in a couple of years time we will be overrun by rats and their diseases.

I realise the council have to save money, but is this the right way to do it? No!
