I READ with great interest your article re the WW1 Exhibition at Newark Park, in this weeks Gazette, regarding the demise of James Power-Clutterbuck, I have some further details of the incident, which may be of interest to your readers.

Initially he enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery as a 2nd Lieutenant, but was subsequently seconded to the Royal Flying Corps. At the time of his death 18.40 hours on 31/6/17, he was acting as an observer not a pilot.

As you stated in your article he was the only son of surgeon Major E R Power-Clutterbuck of "Rockstowes House", Uley, Gloucestershire. He was born in 1894 and is buried at Strand Military cemetary, Ploegsteert, Belgium.

The pilot of the aircraft type RE8 serial No A3538 of 53 Squadron Royal Flying Corps. (engine No 29460 WD 12293) guns serial number A1695 and 24051) was shot down above the trenches, near Le Bizet, Belgium.

The pilot of the RE87 was Lieutenant Leslie Spencer Bowman of the 4th Kings Own Royal Lanes Regiment (again seconded to the RFC). He was born at Ulverston, Lancs. His body was never recovered and he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial to the missing.

Hope this has been of interest.
