THORNBURY and Yate residents may be puzzled at the yellow circles, which appeared following South Gloucestershire Council’s efforts to remove untidy grass growing around tree trunks, lampposts (even when set in concrete surrounds) and, surprisingly, drain covers.
Residents would be dismayed, I suggest, to find that we are paying the council to spray Glyphosate, a chemical banned, owing to its carcinogenic threat, in Europe, and in more enlightened local authorities in UK.
Much could be written about money spent on needless “tidying” generally by the local authority and town councils, when our libraries and care services are threatened.
One could argue that we would have greater biodiversity, more insects for birds to eat, if there was not this obsession with close - cutting verges, even when pedestrians are using pavements for walking and when there are no issues re sight lines for drivers but that’s another debate for another time.
This spraying is a threat to our health.
38 degrees, an online campaigning group, has a petition ,asking the council to stop using this toxic chemical now, and to research alternatives.
If you don’t have a computer, please use your library, (while it is still open) and use the link: you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/stop-spraying-glyphosate-chemicals-on-south-gloucestershire-streets-and-parks
Thank you.
