THEY may be thousands of miles away but school children in Sharpness have shown their support for the family of Madeleine McCann.
Last Friday Sharpness Primary School held a special assembly to show support for the McCann family and tied yellow ribbons on the school's gates.
Raeanne Dunn, headteacher at Sharpness Primary School, said: "It was actually a request from the pupils.
"There is a family in the school with three boys and they came into school one morning and asked if they could tie the ribbons on the gate.
"It has affected a lot of the children here. We are a small community where everybody knows everyone and the children have taken on board what is happening and spend a lot of time talking to each other about it.
"This has been very much been children led.
"We are a community school and the children have a lot of input into what goes on here and this is something they wanted to do.
"We had a special assembly on Friday afternoon where the chair of the school council spoke and we said that Maddie was missing rather than use the word abducted."
Madeleine McCann, age 4 of Rothley, Leicestershire, was abducted from her family's holiday apartment in Praia De Luz, Algarve, Portugal on Thursday, May 3.
Since her disappearance three weeks ago her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, have launched Madeleine's Fund: Leaving No Stone Unturned, a special appeal fund to help them find Madeleine and eventually bring her abductors to justice.
Rewards totalling £2.5m have been offered to anyone who can help with information leading to the safe return of Madeleine, from Rothley in Leicestershire.
Businessman Sir Richard Branson, footballer Wayne Rooney and children's author JK Rowling are among those who have contributed.
