TRIBUTES have been paid to the former chairman of Bailey Newspaper Group, which founded the Gazette.
Peter Bailey died aged 81 on Bank Holiday Monday after suffering for over a year with respiratory problems.
He and his brother Michael took over from their father Fred Bailey to run the Bailey Newspaper Group, which owned among many titles the Gloucestershire Gazette in Dursley.
Peter has been described as "a gentleman of the type they do not make anymore."
Nick Priest, who is married to Peter’s niece Sarah and runs Bailey Newsagents, said: "He was just the most polite man you could ever hope to meet.
"He was very modest, not at all flamboyant and loved to work in the community."
Peter, who lived in Woodmancote, Dursley, started working full time for Bailey Newspaper Group in 1945, though he had previously worked during his school holidays in the dark rooms, where he could indulge his passion for photography.
He was also a keen weather recorder and a supporter of St Mark’s Church, in Dursley and the Heritage Centre.
