Cam residents to fight development

A CAMPAIGN group opposing development on greenfields has been re-launched by new residents fighting a proposed housing site.

Homeowners in Cam have got together to bring back CARE - Cam Against Ruining the Environment group, in response to proposals by a developer to build 100 homes on a field in Box Road.

The members, who have taken their name from a previous campaign against a housing development in Draycott, are opposing not only the Box Road development but any future planning applications in Cam for new houses.

Their main concerns are loss of green space in the parish and the lack of job opportunities in the area, which would be vital to support an increase in population.

Ken King, chairman of CARE, said: "CARE is not just against the Box Road development - is for the whole of Cam.

"We oppose any plans to put houses on greenfield land especially because there are no jobs to support an increase in people here."

Mr King cited the lack of work done on the new Millfields Business Park, in Cam which has promised hundreds of new jobs for the area and the slow pace of the Littlecombe development in Dursley, where hundreds of homes are still to be built.

"It is a bit pointless racing ahead with a building programme for houses when there is no new employment being brought to the town," added Mr King.

"We want to keep people in the area, we don’t know want people to commute all the time as many do.

"There are also questions about whether there will be enough school places for an increase in children."

Hallam Land Management announced in July that it was considering a development of up to 100 homes on farmland it owns in Box Road.

A public consultation was held for people to view initial plans.
