DURSLEY Farmers’ Market has been voted the greenest in the region.
The monthly market was named Regional Greenest Market 2011, for the Midlands, by The National Market Traders Federation (NMTF) as part of its annual How Green Is Your Market? competition.
The competition focused on the environmental issues of running a market such as local stall holders, and local production of food guaranteeing low food miles.
Dursley was entered for the competition by market organiser Michael Holland and the Dursley Town Trust.
Mr Holland said: "Dursley has always played second fiddle to much bigger other local markets but is now firmly in the vanguard of important green issues locally."
Mike Doughty, chairman of the town trust, said: "I am very proud to accept this award that recognises the special position the Dursley Farmers’ Market occupies and the hard work put in to organise the market."
Dursley Farmers’ Market will start again on Saturday, March 10 (8.30am-1pm) and will continue to meet on the second Saturday of every month for the rest of the year.
