A BUTCHER from Alveston has swept the board at an industry awards ceremony.

Perry and Son picked up four gold awards and a category champion title for their Traditional Pork Pie at the BPEX Regional Roadshow and Product Evaluation Event held in Exeter. BPEX works to promote the UK’s pork industry.

Perry and Son took gold awards for their traditional pork pie, traditional pork sausage, Gala pie and Lincolnshire sausage.

Mike Perry, owner of Perry and Son, said: "This is the third year on the trot that we have taken the title in the pork pie category and we are over the moon.

"The pie has been part of our repertoire for 12 years and we are always playing with the mixture to bring it in line with today's taste buds.

"It's actually partly because of the trade sponsors at the roadshows that we have done so well. Using certain ingredients and taking their advice means we have a winning formula that our customers love.

"William Whittingham, our young apprentice who entered for the first time last year, did well again this year, earning a silver award. He has a real passion for butchery and has a drive to succeed, so I'm sure he will be determined to come back and do well again next year."

The Product Evaluation Events recognise and reward product excellence and innovation among butchers.

The pork-based products are judged on overall appearance, size and colour, ease of cutting, texture and structure, taste and smell.
