Plans for new theatre complex in Thornbury move another step closer

AFTER almost a year of deliberations, the location of Thornbury’s proposed new multi-million pound theatre complex looks set to be confirmed.

In a joint statement this week members of Arts and Community in Thornbury (ACT), and the trustees of the Armstrong Hall Complex have confirmed the groups have decided to embark on a joint project.

The statement said: "Two charitable organisations, which have the people and town of Thornbury near to their hearts, are delighted to report that they are currently working together and are hoping to reach a conclusion that will satisfy the aims of both charities, while, at the same time, enhancing the town.

"Currently representatives from both groups are exploring the possibilities of finding a way to achieve their joint aspirations on one site."

ACT was launched five years ago under the premise of building a new theatre and arts centre in Thornbury. The group had first hoped to use land at the old market site but this fell through when the Turnberries Centre was built.

Last year the management committee for the Armstrong Hall announced the need for a £200,000 fundraising scheme to refurbish the community facility with new changing rooms and a potential two-storey extension.

After 10 months of tentative talks the two groups, which share a similar aim of providing the town with state-of-the-art performance facilities, have decided to pool their resources.

The joint statement said: "A successful outcome would provide improved facilities for all the organisations currently using the Armstrong Complex, plus encouraging new member groups.

"A state of the art theatre would be incorporated and could include related resources such as cinema and exhibition space.

"This would not only enthuse the 22 performance groups in this area and organisers of the Thornbury Arts Festival, but would also hopefully attract many more people into the town. "It is hoped this would regenerate local businesses and give Thornbury, the surrounding area, and its inhabitants, a modern facility, plus renewed pride in the town."

Further announcements about the project are expected to be made later in the year.
