MORE than £3,000 has been given to groups in Thornbury thanks to the success of the town’s carnival.

Last year more than 11,000 people visited Thornbury for the newly established Thornbury Carnival after a 13-year absence.

Due to the event’s success the Thornbury Carnival Association (TCA) has been able to set up a charitable sub-committee, which allocates money raised at the event back into the local community.

Groups to benefit from the money include the Alveston Forum, Thornbury FM, soon to be re-branded as Gloss FM, and the newly re-structured Thornbury Town Amateur Football Club (AFC).

At a special cheque presentation event, held in Thornbury last month, Bob Walters from the Alveston Forum was presented with £350, which will be used to help cover the cost of hiring a marquee to be used at a new Alveston event in September.

Gloss FM received a cheque for £300 towards the cost of a decoder, in anticipation of the station's increased geographical reach throughout South Gloucestershire.

Glyn Roylance, director of Gloss FM, said: "It was such a lovely surprise for Gloss FM to have succeeded in gaining this donation from Thornbury Carnival. We share similar aims to enhance the local community and we'll be actively promoting the carnival right across South Gloucestershire this spring."

Thornbury Town AFC was given £500 towards a new goalpost set.

In support of the carnival the Thornbury AFC Falcons are organising a Thornbury Carnival Primary Schools Seven-a-Side Soccer Competition.

The competition will be open to all primary schools in the greater Thornbury area and initial rounds will take place in the run up to this year’s carnival. The semi and final rounds will take place in front of the crowds on the Mundy field as part of the carnival on Saturday, July 3.
