RESIDENTS in Almondsbury are joining forces once again to fight plans to build more than 50 houses in the parish.

Members of the Catbrain Community Residents Association have said they will fight plans by Persimmon Homes to build 55 houses on land off Catbrain Hill.

The residents' association was first formed almost 10 years ago to fight plans to build a warehouse on the land and reformed in 2003 to stop Barratt Homes building 45 houses.

The residents' association, which has approximately 60 members is against this new application because it is on a greenfield site, there is no infrastructure planning and they claim there are already traffic problems with the nearby junction 17 of the M5 and Catbrian Hill itself is not suitable for more traffic.

Mike Hems, from the association, said: "We have a fought a warehouse going up, then they wanted 45 houses and now they have come back and want 55 houses to be built in the field opposite our homes.

"We have had so much development around here in the last 20 years it's got to stop.

"There are only 28 houses along Catbrain Hill and these new properties will look straight into our front windows."

Concerns have also been expressed about the lack of schools and youth facilities in the area.

"The kids have nothing to do there's nothing up here. We already have trouble with anti-social behaviour," said Mr Hems.

This latest application by Persimmon Homes has also received objections from Almondsbury Parish Council and neighbouring firms Airbus and BAE Systems.

BAE Systems said: "An increase in residential properties in this area may result in complaint that would affect the current and future operations of the airfield."

The public consultation on the planning application ended on Tuesday, June 8. The application is not expected to go before South Gloucestershire planning bosses until later in the summer.
