COMMUNITY groups and organisations are being urged to look a little closer to home when they are booking meeting rooms and training facilities.

Yate Town Council is appealing to businesses, charities and the town’s clubs to consider using venues such as Poole Court, Yate Parish Hall and Yate Heritage Centre.

Yate mayor Cllr Ian Blair said: "There are some buildings many people in Yate do not even realise are available to hire.

"The heritage centre and the Pop Inn café, in Yate Shopping Centre, for example are underused as a lot of groups are unaware they can be booked for other uses."

The council owns a number of buildings in Yate and is hoping more people will come forward and support their local community.

"We want people to make more use of the facilities on their doorstep," said Cllr Blair.

Poole Court is popular for meetings and Yate Parish Hall, on Station Road, is very well used, but other places are hardly known about."

Cllr Martin Monk said: "We really need a big community centre and hopefully one will be built on the Sea Stores housing development (at the junction of Kennedy Way and Heron Way).

"A plan to rebuild Yate Parish Hall has been dropped for now so we are encouraging people to make the most of what they have."

Sports areas are also available for public use, including the bowling green at Sunnyside Lane pavilion and floodlit tennis and netball courts at the Howard Lewis Park.
