Thousands of music lovers enjoy community festival in Yate

THOUSANDS of music lovers descended on Kingsgate Park in Yate at the weekend for the town’s most successful community festival ever.

Around 5,000 people enjoyed picnics in the park to the sounds of eight different bands on Saturday and songs of praise and a swing band on Sunday.

Organiser and town councillor John Ford said: "The crowds were bigger than ever and there was a really good family atmosphere.

"We had rock, folk, rock and roll and acoustic music and the comments we have received show that everyone thought it was fantastic."

There were also games and rides, a bouncy castle and face painting for children and the Kingswood Bus Project was on hand to entertain teenagers.

This year was the first time the festival, now in its fourth year, was spread over two days and numbers were up on the 3,000 people who turned out for the one-day festival in 2008. Added Cllr Ford: "We want to continue to make it bigger and better. We started the festival to give the people of Yate something to celebrate and to encourage more people to use the park.

"It has been a great community event and a very happy time."
