THE theft of sports equipment from a village pavilion has prompted extra security measures to be installed.

Wickwar Parish Council is funding new gates at the entrance to King George V Playing Fields following the theft of football kits and corner flags from the sports ground building.

The gates will be locked at night in an attempt to stop young drivers accessing the facility in the evenings.

Council clerk Pat Trull said: "The pavilion was broken into recently and a bag of football kits and corner flags were stolen.

"Nothing is ever kept in the pavilion of any value and this was a pointless act of vandalism.

"The police attend the King George V Playing Fields frequently in the late evenings and move cars out of the park."

The problem with security at the playing fields was made a priority at the latest Ladden Brook Safer, Stronger Community Group meeting and police are increasing patrols in the area.

Anyone who would like a paid job locking the new gates every evening and unlocking them in the mornings is asked to contact Pat Trull on 01454 299120.
