A NEW speed limit is set to be implemented through the village of Rangeworthy.
South Gloucestershire Council will introduce a lower 30mph limit on Wotton Road to encourage more children to walk to school.
Currently, pupils at Rangeworthy Primary School face a dangerous trip to lessons as traffic, including HGVs and articulated lorries, hurtle along the road at 40mph.
The new safety measures will include a 30mph limit on Wotton Road, Patch Lane, Patch Elm Lane, Church Lane and a section of Manor Road. There will also be new road signs, sensor-activated warning signs at the main approaches to the village and the 20mph zone outside the school will remain in place.
Cllr Brian Allinson, executive member for planning, transportation and strategic environment, said: "We are committed to encouraging children to walk to school wherever possible and we know that by reducing vehicle speeds in Rangeworthy, parents and children will feel safer and will be more likely to make their journeys on foot.
"By introducing new speed activated signs on the approaches to Rangeworthy, we hope to remind drivers that they are entering a different environment and that they should take extra care when driving through the village."
Rangeworthy Parish Council has supported the scheme after years of campaigning for a lower limit.
The council said: "We have been pushing for a reduced speed limit through Rangeworthy for some considerable time. This was based on the difficulty and danger for schoolchildren when crossing the Wotton Road at or near its junction with School Lane.
"The police were unable to enforce the 20mph advisory speed flashing signs and therefore other measures had to be taken."
