A SECOND survey is to be carried out on the spot where a Yate teenager died but there is still no plan for a pedestrian crossing.
Another traffic count will take place on Rodford Way nearly 18 months since 13-year-old Daisy Witney was killed after a collision with a van.
Daisy, from Badgeworth, did not use the underpass near the Abbotswood Inn in order to avoid groups of youths who gather there. Instead, she crossed the busy road on her way to a friend’s sleepover.
Following the tragedy on November 3, 2008, councillors in Yate and Dodington called for a crossing to be installed in an attempt to make the road safer for pedestrians.
South Gloucestershire Council carried out a traffic count in April last year and the issue has been a regular priority for Yate’s Safer, Stronger Community Group. The council has now announced it will undertake a second survey in May.
Yate Town Council is furious over the 'inaction' and has resolved to ‘remonstrate with South Gloucestershire Council’.
A resolution has been drawn up stating: "A request be made that something either be done or if it cannot be done, then an explanation be provided to the town council and the public as to why South Gloucestershire Council cannot do anything. "
Cllr Brian Allinson, executive member for transport at South Gloucestershire Council, said: "The pedestrian count we carried out identified the need to encourage greater use of the existing underpass, which is a tall order because you are talking about changing attitudes which have developed over many years. But we are determined to do what we can in this regard.
"The council has, therefore, funded a strengthening of the local police team to step up patrols, carried out regular sweeping and cleaning of the area and we are trying to persuade the owner of the land between the underpass and the shopping centre to make improvements to the land that they own. "In addition, we have continued to give comprehensive road safety advice and training to pupils at local schools."
