Help protect the environment in South Gloucestershire by taking part in the Big Spring Clean campaign

SOUTH Gloucestershire residents are being encouraged to love where they live this spring, with the launch of a new campaign.

As part of the national Big Spring Clean, from March 1 to April 30, community groups and residents across South Gloucestershire are invited to help improve their local environment.

South Gloucestershire Council is now looking for people to join in taking action against litter by cleaning up ther neighbourhoods and open spaces. The authority will provide volunteers with free bin bags, gloves, litter pickers and will collect and dispose of the rubbish and recycling.

Street cleansing co-ordinator Alison Richards said: "For several years a number of regular groups have participated in the Big Spring Clean – giving their time to help keep clean areas which are important to them.

"We also welcome new groups to sign up, and can offer them help and support in organising an event."

Last year around 60 groups took part in the Big Spring Clean, with over 2,000 helpers volunteering to improve the local environment.

Cllr Claire Young, chairman of the communities committee, said: "The Big Spring Clean gives residents the opportunity to work together to make a difference to their local area, whilst enjoying some fresh air and exercise, and helping to bring local communities together."

The closing date for registration is February 22 and application forms are available to download from www.southglos.gov.uk/bigspringclean along with further information on the campaign. Alternatively contact Cath James on StreetCleansing@southglos.gov.uk or 01454 865893.
