GOOD sports at a Thornbury school cycled the equivalent distance of the length of Britain.

St Mary’s CEVA Primary School took up the challenge to raise funds for Sport Relief, the biennial charity event from Comic Relief.

A pupil’s parent set the school the challenge of travelling from John O’Groats to Lands End by bike, scooter and on foot.

Head teacher Karl Joyce explained: “We set up some static bikes in the hall, scooters on the playground and a running track around the football pitch and invited parents, governors and children to use one of these forms of travelling to achieve the distance of just 610 miles for a small donation.

“By the end of the week we smashed the distance, achieving nearly 700 miles. One of our governors, Phil Lucker, cycled for three hours on the last day to ensure we crossed the line.”

Mr Joyce said it had been a fantastic combined effort from the school and wider community, raising £250 for Sport Relief, as well as raising enthusiasm for sport.

He added: “It has inspired a number of children to become more active and increased their self-esteem.”
