A MIDSUMMER art exhibition proved a huge hit with over 50 artists displaying their work over its five day show.

Thornbury Art Club held their annual midsummer exhibition at the Thornbury Methodist Church as professionals and amateurs alike showed off their art work.

The exhibition was a great success with around 100 people visiting every day and several sales were made throughout the five day show.

Once again the art club worked with the Thornbury Stroke Group who hosted a display of their own and £126 in donations went towards the stroke group’s work.

Peter Todd showcased his watercolour ‘The Great River’ as part of the stroke group’s display; Peter has recovered well following a stroke in 2011 with support from the Thornbury Stroke Group.

He was previously a tutor with the art section of the group before becoming a member and now offers help once again with his artistic skills.

Mary Drown created an eye catching design called ‘Where have all the young boys gone?’ which portrayed images of her family members who were in the services and fought during both the First World War and the Second World War on to children’s pyjamas.

A small teddy bear which accompanied the main piece was produced listing the theatres of war and the ranks of Mary’s relatives who were involved in the wars.

The art club displayed the evocative piece beside the poppy pictures which were being displayed at the exhibition after being created for the Thornbury in Bloom competition.

Margaret Rowley, who helped organise the event, said: “It all went very well, we had more people turn up than we thought we would and even made a few sales.

“The stroke group’s work was particularly popular and we were happy to provide a donation to the group.”
