AN ALVESTON pair has walked 290 miles to raise money for a cancer support charity.

Jenny and Jos Gregson completed the walk on behalf of the charity Macmillan Cancer Support on Monday, August 25 which was their 53rd wedding anniversary.

The walk took the couple 21 days and they averaged 14 miles a day, allowing for a few extra miles for finding off-the-track accommodation.

They were expecting hot temperatures after the weather in July but were relieved that it was slightly cooler for most of the walk.

During the walk they caught the tail end of Hurricane Bertha and were well and truly drenched as water tore up the roads.

Unfortunately the weather did not improve for the last day of the hike as they were treated to cold wind and low cloud as they ended the 290-mile course on Chesil Beach.

This is the third long distance walk the pair have done for charity having completed a walk in 2001 and in 2009 and have raised thousands of pounds for various charities.

The couple are well-known for their involvement in the Thornbury Choral Society and other groups within the area.

Jos, 75, said: “We like doing these walks, of course you look forward to a hot bath and cup of tea at the end of a day walking but you never regret it.

“We’ve not got any charity walks planned yet, but I’m sure in five years time we will do something.”

Their route covered the limestone spine of England and they were treated to a series of beautiful villages and landmarks including a 6th century Saxon church, the site of the Spencer family tombs, and the Black Stump in Boston.

They have raised over £3,500 so far but are looking for further sponsorship to go to the charity.
