TALENTED youngsters showed off their skills at this year’s Skate Fest held at Thornbury skatepark.

The original date had to be cancelled due to poor weather but the more relaxed, re-arranged, event was still a big success.

This year’s Skate Fest event was organised by the StreetSpace team who work with children in the community to build positive relationships.

The skate park was a hive of activity with music and barbecue as youngsters showed-off their best moves in front of a lively audience.

Youth worker, Dan Potter, said: “These events are a really important opportunity for kids to invest their time in to something they enjoy.

“Things like skating and BMXing are all about taking risks and through that the kids build their confidence which is an important thing throughout life.

“We had a good turnout especially considering it was all very last-minute – we had over 100 people from all over the area and the youngest kid there was four-years-old.

“We had good weather for the first two and a half hours and then it started to rain, but the kids refused to let it dampen their spirits.”

Money raised by the event will go towards the maintenance and improvement of the skate park.

Thornbury StreetSpace is a local branch of a nationwide scheme and is led by Mr Potter, a community youth worker for Thornbury Baptist Church.

It is supported by Thornbury Churches Together, the Magnox nuclear company's socio economic scheme, South Gloucestershire Council, Thornbury Lions and the town's Round Table.

Its main purpose is to work with teenagers who are considered to be "at risk" or who don't get involved with any youth activities.

Mr Potter also carries out one-to-one mentoring with students at The Castle and Marlwood schools to help them fulfil their potential.
