AN AUTHOR from Tockington is set to publish his fourth book – to coincide with the commemoration of the start of the First World War.

Eric Garrett’s newest book, ‘From Olveston to Aleppo’, will be launched during the next meeting of the Olveston Parish Historical Society, next week.

He is one of the founding members of the Olveston Parish Historical Society and former chair and is now an archivist for the group.

Previously, he has published books on World War Two and the Quaker movement in Olveston and the history of schools in Olveston.

He said: “The reason I decided to write this book was partly to coincide with the anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War and partly because the Old Down troop is something I have a particular interest in.

“Writing this book gave me the perfect opportunity to put the history of the Old Down troop into the history of the area.

“I tend to write these books to coincide with a celebration or a feature that’s coming around.

The next meeting of the Olveston Parish Historical society will be held in the school hall at Olveston School on Wednesday, November 5 from 7.30pm.

Copies can be purchased by contacting the chairman of the Olveston Parish Historical Society, Les Harper, 01454 612304 or from Eric Garrett himself, 01454 613019.

The book is also available to purchase at the Thornbury and District museum.
