TWO members of staff at a Thornbury based meningitis charity will be running their first marathon later this year to raise vital funds for the charity.

Claire Wright and Felicity Robins from the Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) have signed up to take part in the world famous 2015 Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday, April 26.

Meningitis Research Foundation estimate that there are around 3,400 cases of bacterial meningitis and septicaemia every year in the UK and Republic of Ireland. They are easily mistaken for milder illnesses, but unlike a dose of flu can kill within hours and may cause serious, life-long disabilities.

Claire Wright, medical information officer at MRF said: “My job involves updating the educational materials that we distribute to health professionals and the public. I also answer specific questions from people who have been affected by the disease.

“I have witnessed firsthand how MRF funded research has resulted in improved prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia which is why I am raising funds to support future work.”

Felicity Robins, administration officer said: “I deal with both members and supporters on a daily basis who sign up to take part in running events across the UK on our behalf. I turn 30 this year and wanted a personal challenge so thought that I would do my bit by taking part in one of the most well known running events in the world - the Virgin London Marathon.”

Chris Head, chief executive of MRF, said: “We are extremely grateful to Claire and Flic for taking on the London Marathon and raising money for Meningitis Research Foundation.

“Working at MRF they know just how quickly this disease strikes and babies, young children and students are particularly at risk. We rely on voluntary donations to fund our work so every penny raised through their efforts in the Marathon will make a huge difference and enable us to continue our work.”
