THREE students from the Castle School in Thornbury have talked their way into the regional final of a national public speaking competition.

Abigail Bow, who acted as chairwoman, questioner Charlie Woolf and speaker Megan Robinson won the Bristol final of the English Speaking Union contest and will now go on to represent the area in the regional round.

The year 10 pupils were up against speakers from Colston’s School, Cotham School, Redland High School and St Bede’s Catholic College in Bristol and St Katherine’s School in Pill.

The competition, held in QEH School’s auditorium, was closely contested with all six teams scoring highly .

But the team from Thornbury emerged as winners after arguing against the idea that "The Olympic dream is dead”.

The victory was a major achievement as it was the first time the school had taken part in the competition.

Students were coached by Julian Okoye, a finalist in the Speaker Factor, and were supported by teachers Clio Corpe and Louise Branton.

The regional final will be held on March 8 at Blundell’s School in Tiverton.
