THORNBURY and District Museum’s first exhibition of the year is aiming to rekindle some love for everything fire-related as it looks back at the history of fire fighting in the region.

From Tuesday, February 3 until Wednesday, April 22 fascinating fire brigade memorabilia and historic photographs will fill the walls of the museum.

The exhibition looks at how fire was fought before the establishment of the region’s first fire brigade and how fire fighters had to fight tooth and nail to get hold of the equipment they needed.

The moves of Thornbury’s fire station are also traced across the various locations in the town that it has, at some point, stood.

Amongst the historic photographs of some of the town’s past fire crews are the gripping tales of the men themselves – fighting all kinds of fires, tales of tragedy and a fire which turned out to be a myth.

Museum staff are still welcoming tales from anyone with a fascinating story about local firefighters.

Thornbury and District Museum can be found in Chapel Street, Thornbury.

The museum is open between 1pm and 4pm on Tuesdays to Friday and 10am to 4pm on Saturdays. The museum is closed on Mondays and Sundays.
