COUNCILLORS and residents have blasted plans to build ten flats in Alveston

A planning application has been submitted to South Gloucestershire Council to demolish Oak House in Paddock Gardens and to replace it with 10 flats.

In a response to the planning application, Dennis and Jane Walker expressed their shock and dismay at the application.

They wrote: “I am totally shocked and dismayed at the prospect of this planning application which I strongly disapprove.”

“Paddock Gardens is a cul-de-sac of 23 houses and to add 10-off flats to the entrance of Paddock Gardens is totally and absolutely inappropriate for the area.

“The exiting Oak House is a superb and attractive dwelling and it would be a shame to see it go.”

“The prospect of 15 extra cars moving in and out of the proposed development would tremendously to the congestion in the area, creating extra noise and pollution.

At the full meeting of Alveston Parish Council on Monday, February 16, councillors reiterated residents’ concerns about the proposals.

Cllr Terry Hunt said: “Having spoken to some of the nearby residents I can say they are very concerned about the proposals. The density of the proposal is out of proportion to the site.

“The proposals give 15 parking spaces on the site – in the modern day this would not be enough.

He added: “The residents that I have spoken to are also concerned that cars could end up parking in Paddock Gardens.

“The junction is also quite close to David’s Lane and Paddock Gardens and that could cause some problems.

“Also the height of the southern block does concern me and people living nearby. There is a lack of tree screening from the planned three storey building.

Cllr Mike Webb said: “This is overdevelopment for the size of the site. There is not enough parking for the number of dwellings and the development would be completely out of character with the surrounding dwellings.

Cllr Paul Caddick said: “If you allow this to go through then I worry what will happen next.

“I think it’s just too big. This is a colossal building for the size of the plot and is surely just a moneymaking move.”

Alveston parish councillors agreed to object to the plans. The application will be discussed by South Gloucestershire Council who will make a decision on whether to grant permission for the development.

At the time of publication, the Gazette was unable to contact the developer.
