FIRE crews were called to help in the identification of a package left at a recycling facility in Thornbury today.

The police and ambulance service also attended the incident at the site in Short Way after reports that hazardous materials may have been found.

As a precaution the site was evacuated and people in the immediate vicinity were advised to close doors and windows.

Six fire crews from Thornbury, Patchway and Brislington fire stations attended and used specialist equipment for the identification of substances which may pose a risk to the public. Following an investigation the package was found to be harmless.
