A GROUP which was aiming to send 100 knitted items to a South African Hospital has doubled its target.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the Women’s Institute the Alveston group had set a goal of 100 knitted items being sent to a St Mary’s Hospital in Durban, South Africa.

The initial target was blown out of the water as Alveston WI members sent 200 items to the Baby Bear Project which was set up to support newborns at the hospital.

Alveston WI’s goal was to knit sets consisting of a jumper, hat, mittens, boots, blanket and teddy bear which would be given to every baby at the hospital.

The items will now be sent to the hospital which looks after some 500 babies bought every month at the centre.

If anyone would like to help with the knitting or donate double knitting wool/yarn in baby colours (not white), call Alveston WI member Valerie Fergyson on 01454 415773.
