STAFF and pupils at a school in Thornbury are pleased after another “good” rating following their recent Ofsted inspection.

The Sheiling School, based in Park Road, is a unique independent residential school for 19 children and young people aged between six and 19 with special educational needs.

It was inspected between January 21 and January 23 this year and inspectors praised the care offered to pupils at the school which provides a “holistic, nurturing and child-centred environment”.

The school was praised by Ofsted for providing pupils with individualised care that supports their educational and emotional development.

Safety of residential pupils was highlighted as one of the best assets of the school and that they were supported by a “highly motivated and skilled staff team”.

In the school’s last inspection, carried out in 2013, the school was given a “good” rating in both care and education.

Chief Executive and Principal Nico Sialelli said: “We are absolutely delighted to once again be officially rated as ‘good’ by Ofsted.

“As demonstrated during the inspection, we have a strong development plan in place, we have implemented a number of improvements including the deployment of staff, and we have a more thorough approach to areas such as placement planning.

“We are particularly pleased that Ofsted recognised how exceptionally well we work together as a team, and our shared commitment to make further improvements in the best interests of our pupils and the quality of service we provide.”

One way in which the school could have received the top “outstanding” score was by ensuring “that the physical environment is comfortable and homely throughout”.

Mr Sialelli added: “Jo Turksen, our new care manager, has focused on ensuring all the houses have a comfortable and homely feel.

“In addition, we have invested over £10,000 to improve the physical environment of the houses and will invest more after the summer.”
