MORE than £200 has been raised by Charfield school pupils who held an after-school tuck shop to support people affected by the Nepalese earthquakes.

A group of Charfield Primary School’s Year 6 pupils, who had learned about the devastation caused by a series of earthquakes in Nepal, decided they wanted to help people in need in the Asian country.

The idea to run ‘Tom’s Tuck’ was initially taken to the school’s headteacher, Dadydd Lawday, by Tom Werrett and Joe Parker, both 11. They explained their plan to host a sweet shop where all money raised would be given to the Disasters Emergency Committee.

Speaking of the initiative Mr Lawday said: “Both boys are very passionate about helping others. When they came to me with their idea I was touched by their strong desire to help those in need.”

The boys formed a team of pupils who worked in collaboration to organise the event. They created letters, posters and secured donations of money and sweets for the sale.

The stall opened for business at the end of school on Friday, May 15. Tom’s Tucks was inundated with pupils, parents and passers-by who spent a total of £202.84, with a number of donations still arriving.

“We are very proud of the amount we raised and we would like to thank everyone for supporting us,” said Tom.
