PLANS for 125 new homes in Thornbury have sparked a debate about increased housing in the area this week.

Residents and Thornbury Town Council have voiced their concerns after Linden Homes made the proposal - which has coincided with Bloor Homes also approaching South Gloucestershire Council to increase the density of their own development with 40 more homes.

With both applications in the public eye, many have speculated over the consequences and impact on Thornbury if one, or both, go ahead.

More housing would inevitably result in a need for extra facilities – shops, health services, schools and more – and if this is already being considered as an issue, it seems strange that further housing could be introduced regardless.

Traffic congestion is also a potential impact that could be brought on with developments of this size – something which would link closely with concerns over road safety.

While more housing can be highly beneficial, there are numerous factors that should be taken into account.

It is impossible to please everybody, especially in regards to planning applications - and news of 165 new homes in a town considered to already have sufficient housing.

However, the voices of those who live, work, and have possibly grown up in the area should be listened to, so that any major changes in their town have as little negative impact as possible.
