THIS year's Thornbury Horticultural Society Summer Show was a 'great success' with 450 entries and crowds of visitors.

An array of flowers, vegetables and handicrafts were on display at the Armstrong and Cossham Halls on Saturday.

Vice chairman of the Thornbury Horticultural Society, Ruth Kitson, told the Gazette the show was a great success with an increase in both entries and exhibitors.

She said: “The only section down in numbers was the vegetable classes, and this was because of the weather, but there were plenty of flowers and fruits.

“The cooking entries stretched out the whole side of the Armstrong Hall with flowers arranged down the other side.

“Cossham Hall was also busy with the work of children and masses of photographs and handicrafts in all shapes and sizes.

“Mrs Sandra Grey topped with the vegetable prizes and also the preserves, and Mrs Culverhouse had the most points in the flower section.

“Mrs Pat Duru triumphed with her floral ‘summer sparkle’ best exhibit.

“The large cookery section had fierce competition with Mrs Jenny Jones on top with points and the winning Women's Institute was Falfied.

“President Pat Freed presented trophies to winners at the event."

The Thornbury Horticultural Society chairman, Rex Davies, thanked all who made the show a success, especially the show’s secretary, Mrs Culverhouse.

Mr Davies said: "After a cold winter and long cold spring we've had beautiful warm months and lots of sunshine that has made everything grow exceptionally well.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our sponsors helping to keep the show alive, without this generous help we would struggle to run the show.

"Even so, donations to the society are always welcome."

The society's spring show will be held at the Armstrong Hall on March 12 next year.
