A RENOWNED Olveston pop-up artist has painted a portrait of the Queen in recognition of her becoming Britain’s longest reigning monarch.

Vicarage lane resident Angus Macaskill has transformed his house gates into various tributes and works of art over the last few years, and his latest piece is expected to please passing royalists in particular.

The oil painting, which took Mr Macaskill, of Churchill House, around five hours to paint, will soon be displayed on the gates, in the run up to September 9.

This is the date when the Queen is set to pass Queen Victoria’s record, who reigned for 23,226 days.

The artist said it feels encouraging to transform his gates and potentially cheer up hundreds of people every year who walk or drive past the house.

“This painting has taken a while to paint with the many layers, but it’s been fun,” he said.

“Once it is up, which should be around September 2, in advance of September 9, I imagine it will stay up for a couple of weeks so people can come and have a look.

“I’ve put well over 100 on the gate now – it’s quite fun to put them up. Of course, this isn't the first time I have painted Her Majesty before- I did a portrait of her in 2001 as well.

“I paint outside near the gate sometimes and get people coming over and saying how much they like the paintings, or asking what the next one will be - some are eager to know what's next."

The artist has previously transformed his gates into a life-size tribute to the late Labour politician Tony Benn, and most recently, an eight-foot-tall depiction of Jesus on the cross to mark Easter earlier this year.
