FIREFIGHTERS are opening the doors to their station in Thornbury and inviting the public to take a look around.

An open day will take place at the station, in Gloucester Road, next week where visitors will be able to see some of the vehicles and equipment firefighters use, as well as demonstrations involving breathing apparatus and hydraulic cutting equipment.

They will also be able to find out how to join as a part-time firefighter.

Thornbury Fire Station manager Dave Hodges said the open day is a great opportunity for local people.

“Part of the role of the fire and rescue service is to provide community safety advice on fire prevention,” he said.

“We would urge people to come along and talk to us about our free home fire safety visits where firefighters visit homes to give fire safety advice and fit smoke alarms for free, if required.

“We are also looking to recruit more on-call firefighters in the Thornbury area and would love to hear from anyone who might be interested.

“You need to be 18 years of age, fit enough to pass physical selection tests and a medical examination and live or work within five minutes of the station.”

The open day event takes place on Sunday, September 6 from 11am to 4pm.
