SCHOOLS consider the safety of their pupils as paramount – both inside and outside the classroom.

When parents and teachers worked together to campaign for a zebra crossing on Knapp Road in Thornbury, it was hoped that a permanent solution to the dangers of the road would be put in place.

But months later, there is no crossing or crossing guard in place and the anger and exasperation of the campaigners is understandable.

This crossing would benefit three primary schools – equating to hundreds of children – while eliminating the ongoing search for a crossing patrol, which has been unsuccessful so far.

It would also give parents and teachers, who fear a child could be hit by a car and seriously injured, peace of mind that a permanent solution is in place.

Despite efforts from South Gloucestershire Council to fill a crossing patrol role, perhaps the focus should solely be to get a zebra crossing installed, which would be beneficial 24/7, as opposed to limited times a day.

We should be encouraging parents to be active and walk their children to school - as opposed to being dropped off at the school gates - but in return, a safe crossing point should be provided.

Parents should be able to leave their children at school with complete reassurance of their safety.

Thankfully, the council is reacting to the campaign and carrying out a pedestrian and vehicle survey.

Hopefully this is completed quickly - with an alternative solution at the ready - so parents and teachers can sleep easy.
