TENNIS players raised more than £500 for a children's charity during a tournament in Thornbury.

The tournament, held at Thornbury Tennis Club on Sunday (September 27) raised £564.50 towards The Grand Appeal, the Bristol Children’s Hospital Charity.

Fourteen couples took part in the mixed-doubles games, organised by Thornbury-based Tennis Vets Society, which hosts fundraiser tournaments for players from Bristol and surrounding areas over 45-years-old.

Tournament organiser, Steve Wells, said: "We were delighted to be holding our tennis tournament at Thornbury Tennis Club. The facilities are excellent.

"The refurbished clubhouse there is super and it's certainly a beautiful venue.

"The society is based in the town, and we normally raised around £2,000 a year for a variety of local causes, at different venues around Gloucestershire, Somerset and Bristol."

Chairman of Thornbury Tennis Club, Ian Barnett, said: "The standard of tennis was very high and clearly everyone enjoyed themselves.

"Well done for raising so much for charity."

Mr Barnett presented the winners, Steve Archer and Phillipa Stephenson, prizes of plants and chocolates at the end of the tournament.

The money raised will support the lives of sick babies and children at Bristol's Children's Hospital.
