MORE and more parents and teachers seem to be actively campaigning for safer crossing points for pupils to get to and from school.

Last week, campaigners told the Gazette the lack of a zebra crossing near their children’s school in Thornbury meant the journey was an accident waiting to happen.

Despite months of campaigning, there has been little progress in the creation of one in Knapp Road.

But four years into a separate campaign – again in Thornbury - parents, teachers and local councillors are thrilled at the news that the pedestrian crossing they have been campaigning for finally has the go-ahead.

Their success is a testament to the hard work and persistent given by the whole community.

The new crossing will benefit two schools – hundreds of children – and many others who use the safer route.

South Gloucestershire Council’s promise of the crossing at the Eastland Road junction of Gloucester Road will be welcomed by all.

The council confirmed that no objections have been made to its installation, which is promising feedback.

It is inevitable that proposals for new crossings can be controversial, impacting on some negatively while proving useful to others.

The crossing near Manorbrook Primary School and The Castle School is seemingly a rare occurrence where everyone believes it to be essential.

Now it is just a matter of waiting for the crossing and to appreciate the determination of campaigners which resulted in its being in the first place.
