POLICE are taking anti-drug action in Thornbury after finding traces of cocaine in pub toilets.

The traces were found when officers carried out a series of night checks last week.

Officers, with South Gloucestershire Council’s licensing team, used a drugs testing machine to swab cisterns, sills and basins in five pubs in the town on Saturday, October 3.

Thornbury PC Sean White said: “We’ve been aware for some time that cocaine use is common, and these findings more than back up our suspicions.

“We found traces of drugs in all the pubs we checked, some at high or medium level,  in both men’s and women’s toilets. It shows that, unknown to pub landlords who are supportive of what we’re doing, cocaine use is a problem in the town and we are determined to stop it.

“This is not the first time we have carried out drugs checks, with similar results, and we plan to do more in the Thornbury area in the coming months.”
