A DRIVE to increase the recruitment of under-represented groups, reflecting the diversity of modern communities has been launched by police.

Avon and Somerset Police is one of 14 constabularies across the country joining together to share best practice on how to attract particular groups to apply for jobs in the police service, with the focus will be on attracting the recruitment of black, minority and ethnic (BME) staff.

Avon and Somerset Police is joining the National Black Police Association to host an event on Friday, January 29 between 10am and 2pm.

Chief inspector Norman Pascal said: “We recognise we have some way to go to truly represent the communities we serve and are identifying ways to encourage people to join us.

“Much of our work is identifying why these groups don’t see us as an employer of choice and we are also looking at ways to support people through the application process.

The Representative Workforce at Avon and Somerset Constabulary have been working to increase the diversity as a whole and are looking at ways to support people from under-represented groups through the recruitment process.

“This can be people with disabilities, BME or lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities.

Police and crime commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “For Avon and Somerset to be the best police force it can be, it needs to be truly representative of the local communities it serves.

“Being part of the policing service is a rewarding and fulfilling career choice and we hope that people from all backgrounds recognise that.

“It’s important that the doors are open to anyone and everyone who is considering a vocation in policing and wants to make a difference.

“Avon and Somerset is a diverse and vibrant place to live and work and if you have a passion for keeping your local community safe and feeling safe I would encourage you to find out more and apply.”

The campaign, which starts tomorrow, can be followed on Twitter through @ASPolice, @ASPoliceRepWork and using #JoinASP to find out about opportunities for jobs and careers.
