HIGH winds have resulted in the M48 Severn Bridge being closed to traffic this morning after a HGV was overturned and pushed onto the central reservation.

Crews from Patchway, Avonmouth and South Wales responded to the call at 5.51am, and attended the scene on the westbound carriageway of the M48, just after the toll booths.

The bridge has now just been reopened to traffic after both carriageways were closed to deal with the incident.

A spokesman from Avon Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that firefighters made the vehicle safe, adding that driver of the HGV had been released from the vehicle before the crews arrived.

A spokesman from Highways England said “We are expecting a few windy days and advise motorists to take care when using the bridge.”

"We will be monitoring the weather conditions over the coming days and will issue advice and notifications as necessary.
