A SCHOOL in Thornbury has supported World Cancer Day with a dress down fundraiser after a pupil sent a heartfelt letter to the head teacher.

Freya Davies-Mouncher, 8, who is in the year 4 class of St Mary’s School, Thornbury, wrote to head teacher Karl Joyce, explaining how she lost her grandfather to cancer last year and asked if the school could support the cause.

Instantly agreeing to the suggestion, Mr Joyce dedicated worship that week to talking about the importance of research into cancer and the fantastic advances that are being made as a result of fundraising.

Mr Joyce then challenged each class in the school to take part in the “Talking Hands” campaign by designing and writing a supporting message on a paper hand which are now on display in the school hall.

Overall the school raised £300 for Cancer Research UK, which Mr Joyce said he felt set a strong example of the values of kindness and generosity promoted at St Mary’s.

Mr Joyce said: “What Freya has done reflects the care and compassion the children at St Mary’s show for others.

“Most of us have lost someone to cancer and the courage Freya has shown to raise awareness of such a worthwhile cause was something very special, it was a pleasure to support her.”
