MORE THAN 50 residents visited an exhibition in Thornbury to preview early plans for a 180-home development proposed for the town.

The event held at the Chantry by Ainscough Strategic Land gave members of the public the first up-close opportunity to see plans for the site west of Gloucester Road, between the Post Farm and Thornbury Fields developments.

Several residents expressed their concern at the event for the state of the town should this site be given permission, totalling the proposed number of new homes to 1,455.

Thornbury resident Jean Elton said: “The town is swamped by development as it is, this one is a problem as it stretches out even further than the rest. At this rate, Thornbury stands to lose its community spirit.”

Mrs Elton’s husband Martin added: “This plan seems much more vague compared to the others. They are just houses, and not much more is said about the content of the site.”

Rachael Ainscough, land director for Ainscough Strategic Land, said “I’d like to thank those who attended our consultation event and provided us with their comments on our proposals.

“We are grateful for the early feedback received so far, which has been constructive and will be used to further develop our proposals”

She added, “Our scheme, which we will finalise and submit to South Gloucestershire Council over the coming months, contains a commitment to providing public open space for new and existing residents to enjoy as well as approximately 63 affordable homes.

“Our proposals will also provide appropriate financial contributions to the local authority, of which a proportion will go towards providing necessary infrastructure in Thornbury”.
