ALMOST 200 residents gathered for a party at a care home in Thornbury to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.

The "Alexandra Palace for a day" street party, which was held on Saturday, May 14, treated guests to a buffet meal, ice cream and a glass of sparkling wine for a toast to Her Majesty’s health.

The day also served as a fundraiser for the Alexandra Way Care Home, with moeny being raised through ticket sales for the event, as well as a raffle, tombola and other donations from the many visitors.

In total the day raised an estimated £500 raised for the home.

The partygoers were also treated to musical performances from The Castle School steel band Panache and the school’s brass band, and a parade from army and navy cadets.

The event’s showpiece, a cake fashioned to look like a royal crown and orb on a plush purple cushion, was hand crafted by the event’s organiser, Judith Davies.

Ms Davies said: “It’s so good to see so many people enjoying themselves and getting to know their neighbours, while at the same time raising funds for the care home.

“We have been so lucky to have such a glorious sunny day.”
