A SCHOOL in Severn Beach is celebrating its bright and colourful makeover.

A team of volunteers from Marks and Spencer and education charity Achievement for All came to Severn Beach Primary School, armed with with paint brushes, stencils, piñatas and astro-turf to transform the school’s old technology room into an exciting creative space to inspire the children.

The project is part of the Marks and Spencer Spark Something Good campaign, which encourages employees and people from the community to take part in projects that can have a positive impact.

The work included tidying, tiling, painting and stencilling with the design focused on cooking and healthy living.

The tired white walls were given a fresh coat of paint, a large blackboard area was painted on the wall for children to write down their recipes, and pin boards were redecorated for children to display photos of their work.

A bright new storage unit was brought in, fruit and veg stencilling transformed old cupboards and fun items such as pineapple lights, a bright yellow wheelbarrow, fruit and veg piñatas, a fruit and veg clock, and real herbs were also used to decorate the room.

Paul Overton, executive head teacher at Severn Beach Primary School, said: “The work carried out by Marks and Spencer and Achievement for All is absolutely fantastic. What was a tired old technology room is now a bright space for creative expression - technology, cooking and arts.

“It has been brought to life and transformed into a vibrant learning area, equipped to support the design and technology curriculum, and will encourage all our children to approach this aspect of their leaning with interest and enthusiasm.

“As a smaller than average primary school, everyone at Severn Beach works tirelessly to ensure that our children can access the same range of resources and experiences as children in other, larger primary schools.

“The children and the local community will really appreciate the interest shown in their school through the actions of the volunteers in giving up their time and their skills to help make learning a positive and enjoyable experience.

“Parents, staff, pupils and other members of the community will now be able to spend time together sharing their skills, as parents and children will be invited to use the room to cook together. The children will also get to choose the room’s name.

“We are incredibly grateful to M&S and Achievement for All for making this happen. It’s going to make such a difference to the school and all the children and their families.”

Achievement for All coach Maggie Pettit said: “Severn Beach is a fantastic primary school with strong links to the community.

“The campaign is fabulous and we are delighted with the transformed technology room making it an important hub, not just for the children, but for everyone. The new creative room is a ray of sunshine for the school and a great boost for all involved.

“What a fabulous transformation and we hope the children of Severn Beach get a lot of enjoyment and inspiration from it!”
